The season is the schedule. The Town of Truckee issues grading permits between May 1 and September 30, weather permitting, and outside that window every submittal is a case-by-case conversation with the Building Department. Five months, minus whatever June decides to do. That single constraint drives everything: crew size, equipment allocation, which jobs get bid, and why the dirt calendar is full by March. The ground does not match the plan. Decomposed granite over glacial till, with boulders sitting in it at random. They do not show on a plan set and they usually do not show on the geotech borings either. Near the river and through the meadow subdivisions the water table comes up fast enough to turn a clean four-foot trench into a dewatering job inside an afternoon. Estimating Sierra dirt honestly means pricing the rock and the water you have not found yet.

Grade tolerance is where GPS earns its keep. Storm drain, sewer lateral, finish pad — anything with a spec'd slope is the difference between one pass and three. Running Trimble machine control means the grade is right the first time instead of being chased with a rod and a level while the trench sits open. On a short season, passes you do not have to make are the whole margin.

Winter is a different company. From November the same crews move to snow, and the constraint flips from permits to timing. Snow operations are a forecasting problem before they are an equipment problem: you are staging loaders and blowers against a storm that has not arrived, and where the snow can legally be pushed is a site-design question decided months earlier.
